The Bankz Star Watch: The Rima Domination

When one sees a statline of 38 pts, 18 rebs, 6 asts, and 4 blks; the first thing that comes to mind is that a video game has been played. But, In this case this is Hutchinson Hawks senior wing, Kevin Rima, numbers from the highly anticipated contest with the Eielson Ravens. Rima, A 6-6 wing, displayed an array of talents that will make him a shoe in for his third straight all-state selection. Following a 3A Alaska State Championship in 2009, Rima has assumed the leadership role and has his team primed for a possible repeat. His numbers this year are outstanding: 22.5 pts, 17.3 rebs , 3.4 asts, and 3.7 blks per outing. He has two sisters that are division 1 athletes. Marjorie(6-2) is a triple jump specialist at Arizona State University and Melissa(6-3) is a small forward for Boise State University. Kevin, like his sisters, has tremendous athletic ability boasting a 41 inch vertical and he knows how to uses it on both ends of the floor.
Rima is a definite low major talent, and with the grooming of a juco, he could be a guy that is great on the mid -major level.

    New Message Board

For those of you that used to visit the old proboards message board for the Roux, the Sip, the Ark and 901Prepscoop, it has been deleted. We are currently using a new and updated message board that is a lot better and easier to moderate and keep the board clean of all trash and player/coach bashing. If you click on the message board link to the right of the page you will be directed to our new message board.

CCB Player Profile: Jeremy Goods, PG

As I continue to redesign the website, I thought it was important to follow up on CCB Campers from the final camp in 2008. Jeremy Goods stod out the camp and as a senior at Bishop Byrne H.S. in Memphis, TN. the skill he displayed almost three years ago is becoming apparent. He has helped lead his team to 8-4 (3-1, Div. 2-A), and in the process he’s had several 20ppg outbursts. It’s good to see the campers performing so well. Coaches if you have the time to check out a Bishop Byrne game do so, Jeremy has the “goods” to make a college team better.

Player Profiles: 6-5 Mike Chinn (Dawson College)

Mike Chinn 6-5 Dawson CCMike’s Eval: His weakside help defense is excellent and has led to him being the second leading shotblocker on his team. DCC is 7-2 heading into conference play. Mike is averaging 8ppg and 6rpg. Not big numbers but playing as a post player limits his touches at the JUCO level. He has extended his game out to the 3 point line where he is averaging 38% on the season. He has a 6-9 player’s wingspan which enables him to play great on the ball defense.  His strongest skill is his ability to slash to the basket and to establish post position.  At the D-1 low major level he would be a great 3 prospect.  At the D-2 to NAIA level he could play the 3/4 spot with success.  A great prospect who should earn his AA degree this spring.

The BANkz Star Watch: Sparrow is Flying High!!!

    (in black) Devante Sparrow #11

Coach Kelly Growden of the Ben Eielson Ravens has a gem at floor general in Sr. PG Devante Sparrow. Though only standing at only 5-6, Sparrow can play the game with the best of Alaska, and what he lacks in height he makes up for in speed, intelligence and toughness. This Tajaun Porter clone does a everything for the Ravens, whether it is putting up buckets, dropping the dime to a cutting teammate, or even going and grabbing a rebound from among the trees.

This season has started great for senior PG Devante Sparrow as he has lead his troops to a 3-0 start. In the first 3 games, he has averaged 19.6 pts , 4.3 rebs , 7.2 asts per outing. He is averaging this by shooting nearly 59% from the field and about 42% from beyond the arc. With some seasoning and some long hours in the weightroom, Sparrow will definitely be a steal for a coach.

    The BANkz is coming soon!!!

For those of you that didnt know,  Alaska plays basketball and now for the first time ever CCB will bring the northern most basketball coverage in America!!!

ARCH Player Profile 2010: Kevin Pratt

Kevin Pratt 6-3 City University School, Memphis: Boy how they grow. Two years ago I hosted the final CCB Camp. I invited a kid who had just finished his ninth grade year and I thought he would be a huge contributor to a team by his senior year. At that time the team was Mitchell H.S. Now that kid has grown into a 6-3 wing and boy was I right. Kevin Pratt now plays for City University School in Memphis, TN. He has had a high game of 32 points versus a tough Whitehaven H.S. team and was leading his team in scoring before breaking a bone in his face diving for a loose ball.  But coaches don’t worry, he’ll be back in two-three weeks.  In the meantime check him out in this short clip.

    The Roux’s Top Guards C/O 2010

The c/o 2010 is shaping up to be a solid class from this area.  Several players have already signed D1 offers during the early period and there should be several more to come.  Lets look at the top guards in the area:

Langston Galloway 6′3″ Christian Life Academy- Langston has already signed to St Joseph (Pa).  He is a smart player with great outside shooting abitlity and a growing athleticism.

Michael Harrell 5′10″ Southern Lab- Michael is a shifty point with an explosive first step and super court vision.  He has really improved his outside shooting and has verbally commited to Southeastern Louisiana.

Demitri Gill 6′2″ Maurepas- Gill is a solid scorer from mid range has has solid all around tools.  He needs to become consistent every game but could be a low D1 prospect.

DJ Cobb 6′0″ Pointe Coupee Central- Great scorer and shooter who showed that he could run the point last season.  Enjoys an uptempo style and a trapping defense.  He is still perfecting his point guard skills but is getting closeer.  His shooting along garners D1 attention.

Brandon Johnson 5′11″ Glen Oaks- Solid guard with unselfish style.  Would be a perfect program player for any school.  He is continuing to improve his defense on elite guards but should accomplish this through his work ethic.  Had 19 points the first game of the season and 4 3pts.

Ronald Magee 6′4″ Istrouma- Dead eye shooter from anywhere with good length.  He is a high major shooter, still needs to keep working on his defense and rebounding but it is improving and can be accomplished.  Was commited to UNO but has reopened his recruiting process.

Andre Scott 5′11″ Glen Oaks- Long range shooter with solid athleticism.  Has good ability as a SG and would need to play there are have time to develop into a PG.  Could help a DII or NAIA program.

Eric Vidrine 6′2″ Woodlawn BR- solid 3pt shooter who needs to work on other aspects of his game.  We will see if he has improved some since this summer.

Tyler Washington 6′1″ Port Allen- Very improved player with great pull up jumper and solid 3pt ability.  This is a player who enjoys shutting down the other teams best player.  He will score 25 ppg this season, toughness attacking the rim will be where we want to see improvement.  He could definetly help a D1 program.

Cory Self 5′9″ Christian Life Academy- Quick lefty with outside shooting ability.  Needs to play the PG role this season to help team return to championship status.  DII or NAIA type player right now.

Joe Kirk 6′3″ Tara- Good scorer on what has been a bad team.  Needs to add weight to compete on next level but is a solid outside shooter.

Dontrelle Butler 5′7″ Duhnam- Super quick and solid 3pt shooter.  Quick hands on defense but size will hurt him in long run.  Team should have good season and he may be able to help a small college.

Kyle Planchard 5′7″ Duhnam- Another quick guard with long distance shooting ability.  He is not quite as athletic as Butler but together they are tough to guard in the open court.

Donovan Richardson 5′8″ East Iberville- Do everything guard for his team.  He handles, scores and sets up others.  Had 22 points in opening game of the season.

Kevin Caire 5′11″ Catholic High- Tough PG with excellent drive and kick ability.  Needs to keep working on 3pt shot but is tough to guard one on one.  Could play small college ball.

The Roux’s Preseason Top Ten Teams

The Roux will be releasing its top ten teams on Thansgiving Weekend.  This will allow some teams to have their football palyers back and to see what players have moved where.

    2009-2010 Basketball Season Fast Approaching

    The Roux Logo

As you all know the 2009 season was somewhat of a disappointment as none of our Baton Rouge area teams won a state title for the first time in a while. Last year we had Christian Life, St. Thomas Aquinas, Episcopal, and Glen Oaks make Top 28 appearances, but all came up empty as they all lost in the semi-finals. This season Baton Rouge will get back on the map. With veteran squads back for Christian Life, Glen Oaks, Dunham, Istrouma, Southern Lab, Redemptorist, Hammond, East Ascension and several others, do not be surprised if we have a team represented in every classification at the Top 28, including B and C.

While we are getting ready to get started for this year’s season, I would like for you all to email me questions, players who you think deserve stories, key games to look forward too, sleeper teams,  and anything else that you think needs to be discussed. Time to get started again so let’s get ready and have a great season in Baton Rouge and the surrounding 8 parishes.

    Sincerely,

    Bobby Sibley
